….thank you, sympathy, plans…

A nice shot taken by Bjarne Tveitan during the chaotic moments we had. I wanted to say “Thank you“ to all the help and sympathy received to prevent the worse to happen.

With further help and advice from good fellow friends and sailors we are now preparing to get the lady into a nearby beauty farm to repair the cosmetic scratches suffered from this nasty incident. All going well we shall be able to show up in any beauty contest again from May onwards.

Overall we were extremely fortunate that things did not turn out worse.

Chaotic moments…

The storm was forecasted 25kts up to 40kts in gusts. The wind picked up from 8am onwards and I had multiple lines out in all directions – more than usual. What does it help, if the outriggers on the pontoon break off and the whole boat swings around breaking a second outrigger off until we stop alongside the pontoon. A nasty situation with the outriggers scratching the hull… My emergency call to the marina office was responded and help with many fellow boaters around organised. Thank you! I will now assess the damage and revise the plan again. Fair winds…still puzzled.

⏚…Antenna Grounding…⏚

Lothar / EA8DES

As a HAM radio operator there is always something you try to enhance on your installation to improve connectivity. SSB antenna grounding on a sailboat is a science in itself, especially on a hull made out of GRP like ours.
Although the actual radio installation worked fairly well so far, I am up for even better results. Lothar and myself installed today 3.7 sqm of aluminum foil and testing is on its way.

Post Calima Cleaning

SY Geronimo
SY Hullu Poro

As Calima is considered “over” and the wind has calmed down after 7 days unusual strong from South to Southeast direction and constantly between 20 and 30kts it was time for cleaning day!

Teamwork! We rinsed both masts very thoroughly from top to bottom and while Rainer offered to get up on both masts, it was me operating the lines from the deck. I missed the view from the top but was quite happy that Rainer offered his help.

The dinner is on me tonight, three courses…😅

PS: Tomorrow the cleaning goes on, not all done yet. Also more boat work over the next few days to keep the lady in good shape. 😉

☝️…Mast Lift System…🧐

Today I deployed the new mast lift system and went up to the first spreader bar only. As I have to overcome some fear of heights and get used to it, the start was slow but I felt comfortable at all times with this self-pulling system. Next time perhaps the second spreader bar will be the goal. The decision for this system was driven by the fact that no further assistance is needed and you can get into the mast on your own – it works.

☝️Position reporting – offshore

We are planning to go on passage soon and the position reporting via VHF (e.g. Marinetraffic, Vesselfinder, etc. based on AIS) will not work anymore. Therefore the following systems have been set-up to track our routing even while out on the ocean…

1. Noforeignland via HF Ham Radio (updated min. once per day)
2. Winlink via HF HAM Radio (updated min. once per day)
3. Garmin Explore via Iridium (updated every 10minutes)

All going well, these three sites will report our postion with a different timebase. To me it is more a safety feature than anything else.

Click on the image and it shall bring you directly to the latest recorded position.
Click on the image and perhaps zoom out a bit for the right scale. You might move the mouse on the position to see some short messages as well.

☝️IC-M94D Marine Radio

The IC-M94D is the world’s first VHF handheld marine radio, which combines AIS and DSC functionality. This will give some redundancy, if the main AIS system installed onboard fails to operate but also some extra comfort in case you need to abandon the ship heading towards your life raft. These were the two factors, which convinced me to invest into this latest technology radio.

🤿…more equipment…😉

🙋‍♂️ Yesterday I have picked-up my new diving equipment from a local diving school/shop here in the Marina Coruña. It is a 10l bottle with regulators and a pressure manometer. The rest needed I already got onboard. My main purpose is to be able to check the propeller and perhaps replace some zink anodes and remove some fishing lines accidentally caught. The second reason is to be able to dive down to the anchor, if and when needed. Shall be fun and I am looking forward to use it. Fair winds…🤿
