An uninvited visitor was detected today in the cockpit. After quick isolation we figured out, that it is a nasty cockroach.
It came as a surprise to us as we are pretty careful to ensure, that these little bastards are not getting into the boat, which can end up in a nightmare. Another level of precaution will now be applied.

Today we took the bus from Rubicon Marina to Puerto Calero. After having a look around there we then walked along the coastline around 4km to Puerto del Carmen. There is also a small marina but not really suitable for foreign recreational yachts. As stated before, Puerto del Carmen is one of the top notch snorkelling and diving spots on Lanzarote and offers some nice houses and gardens.

Finally I got another project closed today by receiving the Scuba Diver Certificate from SSI Rubicon Dive Centre, one of the leading global organisations for recreational diving. After four dives with dive instructor Jürgen, there is now some basic confidence to explore the underwater world further. Although my certificate is the lowest in the SSI range, I had to overcome some mental stress and this was only possible with the patience and confidence received from Jürgen.

Maximum depth was 12m and the longest dive took 45 minutes. Despite the fact that my initial motivation to learn diving was checking the anchor, cleaning the propeller and some other hull maintenance, I am now not sure where this diving adventure will take me to. The underwater world is a completely new space to me but some of the face-to-face encounters with colourful creatures have left some deep impressions.
Observing from safe distance the teeth of a brown moray hiding in its cave or staying eye-to-eye with some kind of seabream trying to read each others mind for a while before moving on are only two examples experienced.

Only mid of last week Calima started to reach Lanzarote and I was lucky the first three weeks of my stay on this beautiful island. During this time I never had conditions close what you see on the photo above. I have taken this photo today, while Susan and myself cruised by car around the island.
Below you can see a snapshot from the Air Quality Index website, which I also used during my travels in Asia before. Highest levels I ever experienced in Delhi, Beijing and Ulaabataar were around 450ppm on the PM10 index. Although the 123 shown below are far below those levels it is not recommended to do any outdoor sports under these conditions. Imagine how 450ppm looked like. Clean air becomes an asset.
Well, as usual in life there is a trade off on everything. Looking at the map below it becomes obvious that the islands located further west get less of the Sahara sand under adverse wind conditions. For example, the AQI for PM1o is much lower on El Hierro, only showing 33ppm at the same time. In other words, the more west you are, the less you will be affected by Calima. Looking at the rain pattern it is basically vice versa although the individual island’s elevation profiles determine the final impact. The least rain you get on Fuerteventura but it gets the highest Calima pollution.
It seems this Calima comes to an end soon and blue sky will take over again. We will then wash the boat as it gets covered by this nasty sand layer same time!

Open water diving was our plan for today but unfair winds and choppy seas postponed this adventure.
As Yoshi, skipper SY DaYo, has moored at the pontoon next door to the diving school, I spontaneously went for one of his famous coffees!
